Mustard cake is the residue left after pressing oil from mustard seed, and it is one of the oldest organic feeds in Indian gardening. It is high in nitrogen, which drives leaf growth, and it also improves soil texture as it breaks down. Traditionally it is soaked in water for a few days to make a liquid feed — this works much faster than burying the dry powder and avoids attracting flies. Excellent for curry leaf, tulsi, moringa and anything grown for its leaves.

How to use it

• Soak 100 g in 1 litre of water for 3-4 days, dilute 1:10, then water in.
• Keep the soaking bucket covered and outdoors — it smells while fermenting.
• Use once every 3-4 weeks during the growing season.
